Thurrock is a borough within the English ceremonial county of Essex. It is also located within the Thames Gateway redevelopment zone. The local authority in this area is the Thurrock Council. Thurrock lies on the north bank of the River Thames and takes up 18 miles of the riverfront. The entire geographical area of Thurrock is 64 square miles with more than half classified as Green Belt.
Thurrock is surrounded by Greater London to the west, the River Thames and Kent to the south, and Essex to the north and east. Towns and villages located in Thurrock include Aveley, North and South Ockendon, Orsett, Grays, Purfleet, Tilbury, Stanford-le-Hope, and Horndon-on-the-Hill.
Thurrock has a population of 157,000 people that live in a total of 90,5000 homes. 70% of Thurrock consists of Metropolitan Green Belt. There are seven conservation areas and 19 scheduled ancient monuments in Thurrock. There are also 239 listed building throughout the entire area. It is also interesting to note that 494 acres of land in Thurrock is zoned for industrial use.
Thurrock is a borough with ample potential, especially since it falls in the Thames Gateway regeneration area, which, according to the central government, is the area with the greatest commercial and residential development potential.
There are numerous attractions in Thurrock, including the Lakeside Shopping Centre, the Thameside Theatre in Grays, and open spaces like the Chafford Gorges Nature Park. Next to the Lakeside Shopping Centre is Arena Essex, which is a major attraction for motorsports.
