Upminster is a suburban town in the London Borough of Havering with a population of around 25,360 people. It is located 16.5 miles to the east of Charing Cross and is also one of the districts that were identified as locally important in the London Plan.
Even though the town is located on the outskirts of Greater London, it has a terminal station to the London Underground network. It is also connected to London Central via rail.
Upminster?s economic focus shifted from farming to a garden suburb. This was mainly due to London?s expansion during the 20th century and the overflow of commercial and residential developments into Upminster. It became part of the Hornchurch Urban District in 1934 and formed part of Greater London since 1965.
The history of Upminster?s infrastructure is an indication of the technological developments of the time as well as the suburban town?s growth rate. Residents had access to electricity from 1926. Upminster?s gas was supplied from Romford since 1872 and their street lights were gas powered from 1905. The South Essex Waterworks Company provided Upminster with high-quality spring water from 1836. The sewerage infrastructure was established in 1899.
Upminster is amongst the towns with the lowest Simpson index for ethnic diversity in London. The town also has incredibly high levels of home ownership, with over 90% of homes being occupied by their owners. Upminster is not a commercially intensive location. The largest outlet is the Roomes Fashion and Home Department Store.
