What happens when you book

  1. Book online in about 2 minutes

Pick a slot that suits you. The form is short — your address, your boiler brand if you know it, a sentence on what's up. Takes roughly as long as making a cup of tea.

  2. I'll text you the morning of the job

You'll get my arrival window by text, then a live ETA when I'm on my way. No waiting in. If anything's running late, you'll hear from me before it's a problem.

  3. I diagnose the fault and quote the parts

I'll tell you what's wrong in plain English, show you the parts I'd need, and tell you the trade price before I touch anything. No work happens until you say yes.

  4. You say yes, I fix it

Most standard repairs take me under two hours. I'll test the boiler, tidy up, and talk you through what I changed. £197 labour, plus the parts at what I paid for them.

George Lane, Thames Boilers — Gas Safe engineer

It's me turning up — George.

I've been in the heating trade since 1999. Started Thames Boilers in 2017 when I got tired of working for firms that treated customers like numbers. Now it's just me.

I live and work in Greenhithe. When you book, I answer the phone, I come out, I diagnose, I fix. No call centre, no subcontractor, no van driver I've never met. You get one engineer — the same one, every time.

If I'm not the right person for the job — old system, niche installation, commercial setup — I'll say so, and I can usually point you to someone decent.

What a typical repair actually costs

Most of my callouts are one of these five. Here's what you'd usually pay.

Fault Part cost (est.) Typical total Note
Pressure sensor / PRV £20–£60 £217–£257 Usually a quick one.
Expansion vessel £120–£150 £317–£347 Branded replacement, repressure included.
Pump replacement £120–£220 £317–£417 Modulating pumps on newer boilers cost more.
Diverter valve replacement £144 £341 Very common on combis.
PCB (control board) £150–£280 £347–£477 Bigger job — worth checking the boiler's age.

These are typical ranges from real jobs. Your boiler may be different — I'll quote the actual parts price in front of you before I start work, so the final bill is never a surprise.

Common questions

No — and I want to be straight about that. £197 is the labour, which covers the whole standard job however long it takes me. Parts come on top, quoted at trade price (what I pay) before I start work. Total depends on the fault — a pressure sensor repair might come in around £220, something like a PCB or a pump can push £400 or more. Whatever it is, you'll see the trade price of the part before I touch anything.

No charge. That's what 'no fix, no fee' means in its strict sense. If the boiler's beyond economical repair — older system, parts discontinued, cost of repair is more than a replacement — I'll tell you plainly and you pay nothing for me coming out. You can then decide whether to replace or get a second opinion. Either way, you're not on the hook.

That's £99. It covers me coming out, identifying the problem, and writing up what needs fixing. You can take that information to anyone you want — you're not obliged to use me. I'd rather be upfront about that than pretend a visit is free and then surprise you with a charge at the end.

No. You pay what I pay. When I order a part I'll show you the trade invoice if you want to see it — no cashback, no supplier kickback, no 20% 'handling fee' on top. That's unusual in the trade and it's the single biggest thing customers comment on after a job.

No. The £197 labour covers the whole standard job. You don't pay extra just because I turned up. If the job turns out to be longer or more complex — a heat exchanger, a boiler swap — I'll tell you what that costs before starting and you can decide whether to go ahead.

Gas Safe is the legal register for anyone who works on gas appliances in the UK. Every engineer has a unique registration number — mine is 515374. You can check it at gassaferegister.co.uk to confirm I'm qualified and insured to do the specific work I'm doing. If someone isn't on the register, they shouldn't be touching your boiler — full stop.

All the major domestic gas boilers — Worcester, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal, Glow-worm, Viessmann, Potterton, and the rest. If yours is a bit obscure, book or call and ask. I also work on unvented cylinders, central heating systems, and smart thermostats. I don't do new installations (repairs and servicing only) and I don't work on oil or LPG boilers.

My core patch is North Kent — Dartford, Gravesend, Bexleyheath, Greenhithe, Ebbsfleet, Swanscombe, Longfield, Northfleet. If you're just outside, it's worth asking — I sometimes cover the edge. If I can't do the job, I'll tell you straight away so you're not waiting around, and I can often recommend a decent local engineer.
